Staff Spotlight: Kristine Rubio

Staff Spotlight: Kristine Rubio

Kristine Rubio joined us in October of 2020 as our AmeriCorps Program Manager for the Behavioral Health Equity Corps (BHEC). As a former AmeriCorps VISTA member, Kristine provides an understanding of the programs structure as well as being able to relate to members through her own experience of service.  Kristine was drawn to the BHEC team’s commitment to addressing substance abuse through community development with a focus on implementing preventative care and sustainable practices.

Originally from El Paso, Texas, Kristine has spent her careers working in underserved communities along the US-Mexico border.  She has coordinated a range of programs working with individuals experiencing homelessness, youth, and undocumented individuals. One of her favorite projects was working with the Tigua Pueblo that live along the U.S.-Mexico border community where she was able to develop partnerships with the tribal council, the community health center, and members of the tribe to facilitate an epidemiological study to improve local health outcomes.

As an undergrad at the University of New Mexico she received a Bachelor’s in Science in Biology with the intention to attend medical school. However, she found a new passion in Public Health, specifically in Epidemiological research. A few years later, she attended the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health and received her Master’s in Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiology.

Kristine loves to spend time with her partner, three kids, and her two dogs. She hopes to expand her family to include a kitten soon. Kristine loves drawing portraits, usually using pencils but wants to learn how to use digital drawing tools in the future. She also spends a lot of time maintaining connections with her friends and family back in El Paso and plans to be visiting her loved ones as soon as COVID restrictions allow.

Having just moved to Colorado in 2020, Kristine is still a getting used to the slightly higher levels of snow in Denver compared to her hometown of El Paso, but luckily her partner usually shovels the snow for her! While Kristine is missing the Chihuahua Desert, she is making the most of Colorado’s natural environment, spending many weekends exploring with some of her current favorites being Waterton Canyon and Breckenridge. Kristine is always looking for her next Coloradan adventure, so make sure to send your favorite Colorado spots her way!
